Homemade macaroni and cheese on Wednesday night. Butter paneer masala with naan on Thursday night. Waffles with maple syrup for breakfast this morning. David's famous pizza for supper tomorrow night. We are hitting the carbs this week! Knowing (hoping!) that this may be the last Micah gets to eat of such delights for several years, we have lived it up.
It has begun to hit me, though, just what a drastic life-change this new diet is going to be for our family. Can we eat rice, bread, pasta, sweets in front of Micah? Probably not, at least for the first while until we figure out how he tolerates his own special food. And we can't eat his food--too fatty (his portions will be small). Not that this is a bad thing for our health, but it is kind of strange to be both hopeful that this diet will work which would mean that we have to keep doing it, and at the same time lamenting what he will miss out on--birthday cakes, chocolate, digging for the toy at the bottom of the cereal box (do they even do that anymore?). But as people keep reminding me--those things are dwarfed by the fact that if he misses out because of the diet, it also means he's having fewer or possibly no seizures, so he won't be missing out on things because of those! What a day that would be.
Perhaps because of all those carbs, or more likely for no reason at all, Micah's seizures have been frequent this week. As of 3:30 this afternoon he had already had 74 today--yes, you read that right. Yet, amazingly, he continues to do well. We had him evaluated by the First Steps program again yesterday, just to make sure we are on top of any developmental problems that could arise. He's doing just fine. Both the therapists who came to do the evaluation were pleased by his progress since they saw him last fall--he charmed them completely. Considering he is on 3 anti-convulsant meds and still has many seizures every day (they are short head-drop seizures lasting usually under one second and come in clusters), he is still doing amazingly well at this point! We are grateful for this and do not take it for granted. Praise God!
