March update

Micah's post-operative MRI and appointment to see the neurosurgeon happened yesterday. He has healed well, and the surgeon was pleased with his progress. We will continue to see him yearly while Micah is growing to check that the plates and screws used to help in healing his skull remain in the right place as he gets bigger. We got to see a line-up of the MRI's from before surgery, the day after surgery, and four months later. It's kind of weird to see the hole in his brain, but it is less stark than it was immediately following the surgery. The brain fills in a bit, but he will always have a hole where part of his left frontal-orbital lobe used to be. MRI's only show the physical stuff, not seizures, so we have no update on that.

We also met with his epilepsy doctor on Tuesday while we were in Chicago, and she also was pleased with his progress. We have a plan to wean one of his meds following his EEG (which tracks seizure activity) in May, provided that it looks okay.

We have been enjoying life lately. David made Micah a water table with pipes that he can put together in different ways to direct the water--lots of fun times! We are preparing (or at least trying to) for the birth of our new little one in later May. It seems a bit unreal at times that this will happen in just two months, but in other ways it is nice that this pregnancy has gone pretty fast so far. I'm feeling well these days. It is definitely a different experience for me this time, knowing as I do that things don't always turn out as you think they will. I could never have imagined all the joy of having a child, but also the pain of that child having special needs, both medical and developmental. But we continue to live in hope--we're doing it all again, after all!

  1. So glad to see an update from you. I've been thinking about you and your family and wondering how things are going with Micah and the new baby on the way, too. Thanks for sharing a bit of your life!
